A Protective and Spacious Pack with a Unique Design at a Good Price
The llano Hardshell backpack finds a sweet spot in the market, offering features and protection that sit just below the super-premium brands but at a much more accessible price point. It’s a well-thought-out bag with a few unique design choices that set it apart.Unique Layout & Access:The most distinct feature is its access method. The main compartment opens primarily from the panel that rests against your back, a design that offers excellent anti-theft security. It also opens side-to-side like a clamshell, rather than the more common bottom-to-top lid style. There is a slim section that opens from the outer shell, but it’s best for small, flat items like papers, a phone, or a tablet. This back-panel access will take some getting used to, but our initial impression is that the layout is very practical, and we’re eager to test it further in the real world.Build Quality & Protection:The overall construction feels robust. The semi-hard outer shell is a definite benefit, offering a higher level of protection against sharp bumps and jarring encounters than a typical soft-sided bag. As expected in this more affordable bracket, it’s not on par with a multi-hundred dollar pack—the stitching appears up to the task but isn’t over-engineered, and the zippers feel like one area where costs were likely saved. That said, the build quality is equal to, or better than, other packs we’ve seen in this price range, which is a big plus.Generous Capacity & Comfort:Because the pack appears a bit more squared off than some, the internal space is generous. We were able to easily pack in 2 camera bodies and 4 lenses with some room to spare, in addition to a laptop and tablet in their dedicated sleeves. However, one area for improvement is the external side pockets. While useful for a phone or a small water bottle, they are not large or deep enough to securely hold a standard, full-sized water bottle. A notable comfort feature is the shoulder straps, which are wider than what you typically find on a pack of this size. This design does a great job of distributing the weight more evenly across the shoulders, making for a more comfortable carry, especially when the bag is fully loaded with gear.Overall Verdict:This is a very nice camera pack that offers excellent value. It provides solid protection and ample room in a thoughtfully designed, if unconventional, layout. Time will tell how the stitching and zippers hold up to long-term use, but our initial impressions are very positive. We will be sure to update this review if any issues arise.

Excellent upgrade as an intermediate solution.
I upgraded from a smaller, cheaper bag to this… boy was it an upgrade. first, the size upgrade: this bag was considerably bigger than my other bag, and it allowed me to store a full additional lens and more neatly compartmentalize my accessories. I am not totally sure what the capacity of my previous bag was, but I know this is bigger. Also, this bag opens on the back and the front. On the back (outside of the bag) it opens to a laptop sleeve with some additional slim pockets. This side of the bag also has a durable plastic with a rubber-like texture… it might be described as hardshell, but it is somewhat flexible and not all that hard. Nonetheless, it is more rigid and more durable than plain fabric. The inside pocket (where it contacts your back) opens to reveal the camera bag portion of the backpack with its included velcro dividers enabling full customization of the compartments. there is an additional laptop sleeve on the “lid” of this compartment which I find useful for storing my filter sleeves in. Since this bag is not too large, and it is easy to access, it provides a simple, easy bag for traveling. Whether you need to grab something quickly or fit it onto a plane as a carry on, this bag would be my go-to solution. On top of all this, it isnt going to break the bank. Many camera bags are expensive for no reason, but this offers most of the same features at a fraction of the cost. I would definitely recommend this for the budget-minded camera user.

I used this pack for a day shooting in the city. The hard front shell is the main feature. I felt my equipment was well-protected when I was navigating busy streets and the underground. Inside, I configured the dividers to hold my mirrorless body with a lens attached, plus two additional lenses and a battery charger. It was a bit snug, but everything felt secure. The laptop compartment just about managed my 15-inch machine. What I ended up using most was the quick-access side panel. I could swing the bag around on one shoulder and pull the camera out without taking the whole thing off. The straps are comfortable enough for a few hours, though by the end of the day, I could feel the rigidness of the back panel. It’s a good setup for carrying a specific, limited kit securely.

This is a very good camera bag. I’ve wanted a hardshell camera bag for a while for keeping my camera gear in the car where other things get thrown in and around it. This bag is excellent and provides excellent protection for your camera and lenses. The straps have ample padding provided you don’t fill it with equipment that is too heavy, in which case I’d suggest paying more for a rucksack with better padding.There is plenty of space with adjustable dividers inside to hold a couple of camera bodies, a few lenses and accessories for example. There is a thin pocket opposite the main camera storage area that will hold and protect a tablet or thin laptop up to around 14″ I reckon.There is also a thin zip compartment directly behind the hard outer shell which is ideal.for storing memory cards, filters, lens wipes etc.My only main complaint about this bag is the side pockets. This is the second bag I’ve tested recently that has these awfully designed side pockets. They’re ok if all you want to do is put a tripod leg in them but that said, the tripod leg can’t sit deep inside the pocket and therefore it pushes the tripod up really high on the side of the backpack. For this reason, it’s actually better to just let the tripod hang but that means it swings around when you’re twisting or bending over. The pocket also can’t be used to hold a drink bottle because of this poor design. If you’re out for a few hours with your camera gear, chances are you’ll want a drink with you and these pockets are absolutely hopeless for that. I could understand this design for a super cheap bag where they’re trying to cut cost as much as possible to bring you a cheap, mostly functional bag, however when we’re talking over £50 for a bag I’d suggest this is a poor choice.This spoils what is otherwise an excellent bag.

The llano 22L Large Hardshell Camera Backpack arrived well packaged in a large cardboard box.My first impressions were what a great quality, well-made backpack this is.It is billed as a ‘hard shell’ backpack, however it’s more a semi hard-shell. However, as the backpack is so good, this isn’t a deal breaker for me.The front part where the semi hard-shell opens up has a compartment with a large mesh pocket and two smaller pockets, ideal for sundry bits and bobs like cables, batteries, film etc.The camera compartment is a separate compartment at the back of the backpack. This is well-designed as this is where you want the camera equipment to be, making pick pocketing of the equipment much harder, if not impossible. There are numerous dividers, as shown in the product description photos, and the dividers can be arranged any which way you choose to suit your own personal equipment. There are also two large pockets suitable for laptops.The only slight niggle I have is that the tripod holder is on the side of the bag, whereas I’d personally prefer it to be at the bottom of the bag to make the weight a bit more even. However, once again, not a deal breaker for me. Talking of the bottom of the bag, it has two grips on it which help steady it when on the ground.The backpack is just as described and looks exactly like the product description photos. It is a really good quality backpack, well worth the current price tag of £57 in my humble opinion.
