Seems to have a teflon coating where the water goes in…
This espresso machine is an interesting mix. It feels and looks well made, but leaves you with a ton of questions. It gives you a few ways to make espresso, brews an exact 2 oz shot, and when you go with the option for it to heat the water, it does come out nice and hot – I would say just the right temperature. I was extremely surprised how hot it was, as I had tested a different machine and you were expected to add hot water to it, which made it (in my opinion) much less convenient than what you want when traveling. With that being said, it has a plethora of cons so far. For one, the battery only lasts from 3 – 4 shots, and takes over 3 hours to recharge. The top chamber where you would put the water appears to have a teflon coating – something that absolutely should not be, as we know it to be toxic. The instructions barely tell you how to operate it – which, by the way, clearly state that it takes 5 minutes (and it does – I clocked it) before it heats the water to the appropriate temperature and pulls the shot. There are almost zero cleaning instructions (it just tells you not to clean the main body or immerse it in water and to clean the cup when done), and no instructions on how to care for it or descale it. There is also no information on how much (or how too, for that matter – tamp? Loose espresso? Pack it? How much to fill? NOTHING) espresso to put into the provided chamber. They say to be careful and not touch the red button on the top as it gets hot…there is NO red button. Just a yellow piece of silicone that doesn’t even get warm. They basically tell you what not to do and how to trouble shoot. I have not had the ability to pull a shot with actual espresso as of yet – just hot water – because I am still trying to get the chemical smell out of the water and make sure it’s clean from being manufactured before I actually drink something that it’s made. I was only able to get 3 – 4 uses out of it with just hot water and it is now still recharging (for, as I said, over 3 hours now) and will have to figure out by trial and error on how to get a good shot of espresso when I fill the “do it yourself” capsule part. The last time I ran water through it, the chemical smell was even stronger than the first time. It seems if you make 2 espressos back to back, it does get hotter, but that also affects the chemical / plastic / teflon scent. I don’t know if I can run white vinegar through it like you would do with a normal espresso machine, because I don’t have a clue what the components are made of and if that could do damage to something (like a cheaply made part) as they tell you nothing. It is important to note that you need to take it apart and let it completely dry out (it does not completely drain the top where you put the water in – it leaves a tiny amount, plus condensation from steam) as you would otherwise run the risk of mold in the inner workings. If I can get the toxic scent out of the water and get a good shot out of this, I will update. If I can’t, it will lose another star.

A café-quality espresso halfway up a mountain was amazing!
I brought the Mulli Cordless Electric Espresso Machine on a weekend hiking trip with a few friends, mostly out of curiosity. It’s lightweight (just under 1.5 pounds) and compact enough to fit in my backpack’s side pocket, so carrying it was no problem. When we stopped to rest near the summit, I pulled it out, and within minutes, we had hot espresso shots steaming in the cool mountain air.The self-heating feature is what impressed me most. Starting with room-temperature water, it reached about 198°F in roughly three minutes, and the 20-bar pressure really does pull a strong shot with a nice crema on top — not watered down like most portable coffee gadgets. I used an NS capsule for the first round and ground coffee for the second, and both tasted rich and smooth. The stainless steel build feels durable but sleek, and it’s super easy to rinse out and reassemble after use. The battery lasted through multiple rounds, easily five hot shots before needing a recharge, which was perfect for our group.Honestly, it turned a simple hike into something memorable. There’s just something about standing on a ridge, holding a freshly brewed espresso, that feels like a small luxury earned.
