Secret Codes – Lost Landmarks – Hidden Clues – Real Locations

Before Jake’s grandfather died, he was on the trail of a centuries-old mystery. And he has entrusted that mystery to Jake, leaving behind a set of hidden codes, riddles, maps, and other clues that lead Jake and his friends on a scavenger hunt into the heart of Colorado’s wild and rugged Rocky Mountain National Park.
Through twists and turns, the mystery unfolds while Jake, Amber, and Wes learn about survival skills, natural history, integrity, character, and friendship.

While camping in Rocky Mountain National Park, they discover they are not the only ones on this quest. An elusive shadow group is close on their heels.

Illustrated by the author, this page-turning adventure is designed to capture the imagination of even the most reluctant of young readers. Parents looking for a delightful read-aloud adventure will find it hard to put down. (Word of Caution: readers frequently note that this is a “Please read just one more chapter” book).

If your family loves the enchanted lands of our national parks, this series will take you to hidden places and into breathtaking landscapes. If you enjoy movies like National Treasure and Uncharted or mystery adventures like the Hardy Boys and Gary Paulsen’s survival story, Hatchet, you’ll love this first installment of the National Park Mystery Series.

Worth the money and the read – get it and read to your kids!
A well written children’s book. Read this to my kids this week while we explored the Shenandoah national park because I wanted a good camping book and loved the idea of mystery, national park themed, and clean. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that the book was also detailed and well written with fun facts along the way. My kids loved it and literally yelled “no! Just ONE more chapter!” And the end of EVERY chapter, and my 8 year old has already demanded that I buy the next one when we finished the first. I really appreciate that there’s: 1. No Romance of any sort so far, 2. No foul language or sketchiness 3. Nothing too terribly dark or occult, etc.I also appreciate that the writing is thorough and descriptive, that there is legitimate dialogue between the characters, that there are multiple layers of story intertwining throughout, and that even though the kids hiking alone etc. is somewhat risky behavior, there is also clear parental awareness and permission, good upright morals, and an emphasis on doing the right thing. I hope this review encourages you as you write the next few books. We are looking forward to reading them all.

Beautifully written! Wholesome, engaging, FUN read for kids!
This series is a must buy! I have read all 4 with my 6-7 year old son and we eagerly await #5 to arrive any day!I am extremely picky when it comes to books.. so many children’s books lack depth and skillful writing- but not these! The storyline is engaging without all the chaos, drama and fear-based plots of many other books. It’s not your typical “good guy vs bad guy” and there are no scary parts. My son is quite advanced and brainy, he loves nature and animal facts and I felt this actually stimulated him in a wholesome way. These books could easily be for 6-10+ – perfect for mamas to read to their kids or for older kids to read by themselves.High quality writing while offering loads of geographical and nature education, as we’re taking on tours of the National Parks of the US. Thoughtful character development and so very important & human themes seamlessly woven into the stories ( healthy expression and processing of anger, jealousy, teamwork, communication, trust, loyalty…)Aaron Johnson is an exceptional child’s author, I bow to his commitment to producing a true treasure of a children’s book series!! Bravo!!!

National Park Mystery Series is A+ for the whole family
Every single one of these books in the series is excellent. My 7 year olds can’t wait for the next release. They are the perfect balance of fun, mystery, interesting facts about America’s National Parks, and great dialogue among the characters. The author does a superb job of weaving adventure, family dynamics, conflict, morality, realistic conflict resolution, hiking and camping safety, and American history together. As parents, we love these books just as much as our kids. We’ve shared this series with the school librarian and teachers. They all agree. Truly a great series that leaves you wanting to seek your own adventure in the National Parks.

Grandma approves the National Park Mystery Series by Aaron Johnson
As a grandmother I like to read books before I gift them to my grandchildren and the National Park Mystery Series make a wonderful gift for children of all ages! I have read all 5 books and I can’t wait for Book 6 that should be available next spring. I love the books and my grandchildren ages 9-11 now, but they started reading the series several years ago and they love the books too! There is mystery, suspense, you will find humor and adventure…I give this series 5 stars! Thank you Aaron Johnson for your creativity and love of nature, National Parks, and a riveting story!

For junior and not-so-junior rangers alike
Mystery in Rocky Mountain National Park is geared towards the younger reader. As a not-so-junior National Park Enthusiast I was entertained by the Hardy Boys-style mystery set in one of America’s National Parks. I found it a quick and engaging read and I look forward to the other installments in the series.

    Captivating series! A real page-turner!
Wow! What an amazing book! I bought this for my 3 teen boys because we just went to RMNP a few weeks ago. I decided to read it to see if I should order the remainder of the series. This was completely captivating! Clean, good values, and a good emphasis on obeying your parents. I can’t recommend this book enough. I finished it in 4 hours and immediately ordered the rest of the series! I love the occasional beautiful drawings as well!

Excellent Mystery Outdoor Collection for My 9-Year Old
We’ve read the first two of the three book series and are halfway through the third (I understand the author plans to keep going). My daughter and I are doing you-read-a-page, I-read-a-page sessions almost daily and enjoying it.For kids, this is a clever mystery series that introduces the grander of three different national parks and a decades old puzzle being tackled by three young teens who are vacationing with their families. The parks are given good description (I’ve been to two of the three) in a way that should interest young readers in the wonders of natural America. The mystery is plausible to young readers with enough mystery to be engaging. The author also pivots between the 1800’s, when the object in question became hidden and pursued, and present day. The present day is triggered when the recently deceased grand-father of one of the three adventurers leaves him a host of clues (some of them hidden in the national parks) that he and his two companions are following in pursuit of solving the mystery. Adding to the suspense of the mystery, it seems that they are being followed by nefarious pursuers who are after the same item they seek. For adults, the writing is age appropriate, but not simplistic. I am enjoying reading this with my daughter and the story hasn’t bored or become repetitive. It has a good literary flow and is well crafted. Perfect for how she and I are tackling the series.

Great Read for Kids & Adults!
I saw an ad for this book on Facebook and decided to look into it further. We are huge fans of our National Parks and visit RMNP often. I loved the twists and turns and suspense in the book and I think our grandchildren (9 & 10) will really enjoy these books. I read book 1 to make sure there weren’t any surprises and I can’t wait to read the remaining books! Highly recommend!

Looking for a great series for both boys and girls… especially the ones who aren’t into fantasy? This is a great start to an ongoing mystery series with fantastic history and exploration of the US’s National Parks. Family, friends, mysteries, team work, history, camping, wilderness… it’s all there.Highly recommend for reluctant readers.

My 11 year old is an avid reader. We picked this up for him. He read it in a day. Said he loved it, “especially the 1880s parts.” Then he said that the author was tricky because he makes it so that you “have” to buy the next book. I asked why. He said it’s because each subsequent book has clues to solving the mystery. Long story short, he then asked if we could buy the next book!
